Sitgraves, one of the few Louisville-area African-American thoroughbred owners and trainers, past or present, died Thursday at Hospice Palliative Care of Louisville's inpatient unit at Norton Healthcare Pavilion. He was 87. Sitgraves grew up around horses, being raised on Heywood Avenue, about a block from Churchill Downs.

He became licensed trainer in 1934, making a name for himself by running horses at tracks in Detroit and Cleveland. But most of his success was local, at the old Miles Park and Churchill Downs. At a time when there were few minority trainers, Sitgraves proved to be among the more successful. In 1962, he achieved his biggest accomplishment by winning the Junior Derby, Miles Park's top stakes event, with a 2-year-old colt named Bob's Dislike. He also had horses that won allowance races at Churchill Downs and Miles Park, and in 1952 Sitgraves trained Syndicate, which won nearly $100,000 while racing in Detroit.

Sitgraves retired from racing in 1979. A video that's part of a Kentucky Derby Museum exhibit called "African Americans in Thoroughbred Rac- ing" opens with Sitgraves watching morning workouts at Churchill. After his retirement, Sitgraves continued to live in the neighborhood where he grew up, just a couple of blocks from the Downs. "When it's in you, you just have to be where i it happens," he said in the video, referring to his love for horses. Sitgraves was a member of Street Baptist Church and is survived by his wife, Essie.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at A.D. Porter Sons, 1300 W. Chestnut with burial in Louisville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m.

John Bradley, former general manager of Tattersalls Horse Sales, died Thursday of colon cancer at his home in Keene. He was 57. Bradley was general manager of Tattersalls for three years before leaving several months ago.

He also operated Bradley Standardbred Agency, a business he be- AROUND KENTUCKY LEXINGTON Pines to be cut down to halt beetle's spread The U.S. Forest Service will begin cutting down more large, bug-infested pine trees in Daniel Boone National Forest in southeastern Kentucky on Monday in an attempt to prevent the spread of Southern pine beetles, a forestry spokeswoman said yesterday. The beetle destroys the habitat of the red co*ckaded woodpecker, a species listed as federally endangered. The woodpecker builds its nests only in the cavities of large, mature pines. The woodpecker population had been down to six, but officials now estimate there are 18.

Most of the increase has come from bringing in birds from other states. In February, before mating season began, about 100 infected trees were cut down in areas within 200 feet of the woodpeckers' nest trees. Ten more have been cut since then. Now the Forest Service will cut trees near the nesting sites but outside the 200-foot area. About 360 trees will be cut on 182 acres.

"We're racing against time," forest supervisor Ben Worthington said, adding that warmer weather soon will allow the beetles to spread more rapidly. In May, the Forest Service is expected to begin cutting infested trees from a larger area. Thousands might be cut in an attempt to stop the spread of the beetles. Forest Service officials said the current outbreak probably was caused by the drought or unusually warm conditions over the last several years. LEXINGTON Web site lets youths write about books A first-grader-turned-book critic was able to tell other kids around world what he thought about the book "Jimmy Lee Did It." Michael Overstreet said he liked the mystery in a review published this week in a new cyberspace book club.

"I enjoyed reading this book because it makes me pick up a magnifying glass and solve the mystery," the 6-year-old wrote. Michael's review is one of the first contributions to the Fayette County Public Schools' Literary Book Club, launched last month. The idea is to get children to read more books and share their thoughts about what they read with others, improving their reading and writing skills in the process. Bradley wrote for harness-racing publications in North America and overseas, and compiled two books on standardbred history and pedigrees, Modern Trotting Sire Lines and Modern Pacing Sire Lines. He also was honored for his contributions to harness racing by the Harness Tracks of America. Survivors include his wife, Joan Van Blarcom; his mother, Eileen Bradley of Whiting, N.J.; two daughters, Tracy Frary of Philadelphia a and Kristin Bradley of Annapolis, and a grandson. Former Fleming sheriff acquitted in sex case Associated Press FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. A jury dropped seven of 12 sex-abuse-related charges against a former sheriff and failed to agree on the five others. Jerel Purcell, 53, a former Flemingsburg police officer, Fleming County sheriff and longtime businessman, was charged in 1998 and 1999 with preying on young boys for nearly 30 years. An indictment said Purcell "engaged in deviate sexual intercourse" with a child who was younger than 12 at the time. The abuse began in 1979 and went on until 1985, the indictment said.

In 1993 or 1994, Purcell persuaded another child under 16 to "engage in a sexual performance" while posing nude for a photograph, the indictment said. During the trial, three men testified that Purcell had sodomized them at local fishing spots. A fourth witness told jurors he was the boy Purcell persuaded to pose for the photo. Several other witnesses also claimed Purcell had tried to get them to disrobe they were boys. A retired school superintendent and an area minister vouched for Purcell's character and strong work ethic during the three-day trial.

Several witnesses said they would trust their sons or grandsons with Purcell. Purcell was convicted last April by a Fleming County jury in connection with the photograph. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for promoting a sexual performance by a minor. He is free pending appeal on $100,000 bond. He could have faced life in prison if convicted on all counts Thursday.

Purcell admitted taking the nude photograph but adamantly denied the Rebecca Jackson's events manager quits abruptly The Courier-Journal The events manager for Jefferson County Judge-Executive Rebecca Jackson resigned abruptly yesterday afternoon. Todd Calvert didn't say in his resignation letter why he was leaving during the Kentucky Derby Festival, a busy time for his position. "He told us he was resigning, and that's all I can say," Jackson's spokesman, Troy Riggs, said last night. "In the meantime until we find a replacement, his duties will be distributed to other staff." Calvert planned events for Jackson, including the year-long Millennium Celebration, and was one of her liaisons to the Kentucky Derby Festival. He has been with Jackson's office for one year, Riggs said.

Calvert could not be reached for comment last night. HALLETT GUTTER COVER THE VERY BEST FOR LESS "The Ultimate in Leaf Control" Abrams Roofing Sheet Metal, Inc. 361-7777 361-7888 other allegations. The jury in Fleming Circuit Court deliberated for more than four hours before returning innocent verdicts on seven of the charges and announcing they had deadlocked on five others. Purcell hugged his aunts and smiled after the announcement.

A few yards away, one of his accusers buried his head in his hands and fought back tears. Commonwealth's Attorney Stockton Wood said he plans to consult with the victims and may seek a retrial on the remaining five counts. Defense attorney Charles Rolph praised the jury's verdict. "We felt from the beginning that there was no substance to the charges, and I don't think the jury had a difficult time in determining who was telling the truth about the matter and who was lying," he said. Defense attorneys repeatedly questioned the accusers' credibility, noting that two of them were convicted felons and that the other had a troubled home life.

None of the alleged victims could remember specific dates and times, and they could not produce eyewitnesses or physical evidence, defense attorneys said.
