BUTLER, JAMES J. left this world peacefully at his home in Fairfax, CA, on May 28, 2001, after a lengthy bout with multiple sclerosis; he is survived by Carol and their son, Tony: daughters, Margaret and Ellen; daughter-in-law, Debra, and granddaughters, Alicia and Annalisa; he was predeceased by his first son, Scott, in 1988.

Jim was born Sept. 25, 1923 in Mexico, MO, the son of James Butler Sr. and Marvel Taylor. He graduated with a B.S. degree from the University of Illinois in 1948 after having served as a Navy test pilot during World War II.

He attained his L.L.B. from Tulane University School of Law in 1952. practiced law in Shreveport, LA and St. Louis, MO, performing trial and appellate work in the U.S. District Courts, Supreme Court of Louisiana and the Supreme Court of Missouri.

He also served as acting city attorney for the City of Florissant, MO. In 1965, he was appointed chairman of the Missouri Dept. of Labor by Gov. Warren Hearnes where he served until 1976. In 1976.

he was appointed administrative law judge for the Federal Dept. of Labor administering multiple case law until his retirement in 1993. Jim enjoyed politics, old movies, football, baseball, basketball and golf. Scattering at sea will be conducted by the Neptune Society on June 22, 2001. Memorial contributions may be made to Northern California Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Hospice of Marin.

Burial will be private. Mr. Fordyce was born on July 4, 1907, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was educated at Middlesex School, Concord, Massachusetts and Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts. He concluded his long business career in 1977 with Merrill Lynch having advised many investment clients since joining G.H.

Walker a predecessor to Merrill Lynch, many years earlier. He is survived by his wife, Adele Dwyer Fordyce; his daughters, Jane Noland Fordyce of Rosebud, Missouri and Paris Garroway Day of San Antonio, Texas; and his son, Edward W. Fordyce Jr. of Dallas, Texas; he is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was an avid student of United States history, particularly the events and personalities of the U.S.

Civil War. He was a member of the Civil War Roundtable, the Sons of the Revolution and the Society of the Colonial Wars. He was also a member of the University Club. He is remembered by his family for his unfailing graciousness, generosity, reserved sense of humor and the kindness and love he showed them and his friends.
