The President/CEO of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce is the chief administrative and executive officer and is responsible for seeing that the strategic initiatives and policies of the Board of Directors are effectively implemented. The President/CEO directly reports to the Chairman of the Board of Directors and communicates on a regular basis. This is a working, non-ceremonial position. The President/CEO serves as a non-voting member of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and all committees. The President/CEO is responsible for administration of the Plan of Action in accordance with the Board of Directors. The President/CEO is responsible for hiring, discharging, directing, and supervising all employees. With the cooperation of the officers of the Executive Committee, the President/CEO is responsible for the preparation of an operating budget covering all activities of the Chamber. Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the President/CEO is responsible for the maintaining continuity of the Chamber 501(c)(6). The President/CEO advises the Board and committees regarding policy, programs, and other key initiatives and serves as the principal advocate and spokesperson for the Chamber in conjunction with the Chairman. The President/CEO works closely with a wide range of constituencies in the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors to build support and coalitions consistent with the Chamber’s overall vision, mission, current goals, and priorities.

Basic Function: The President/CEO is the chief executive officer of the organization.

Scope: The Chamber Board of Directors are responsible for developing the strategic plan and priorities for the organization, monitoring the Plan of Action and its continued appropriateness, and safeguarding all funds received by the Chamber and for their proper disbursem*nt The President/CEO drives development, implementation, and monitoring of operating plans (business, financial, fund raising, marketing, and operating plans). The President/CEO is responsible to the Board of Directors for the Chamber’s success, stability, and longevity as well as the full range of management activities: coordination of the planning efforts, organizational structure and procedures, motivation of volunteers, income and expenditures, maintenance of membership, employment, training, development and supervision of staff, interpretation of policy, and maintenance of facilities.

Business and Operational Plans

  • Through proper chamber committees and staff, the President/CEO is responsible for the development and execution of business, financial, fund raising, marketing, and operational plans to achieve the Chamber’s strategic objectives, including:
    • Promoting business, cultural, and community growth and development by promoting economic and tourism programs designed to strengthen and expand the wealth-creation potential of all business within the trade area.
  • The President/CEO maintains the responsibility of setting measurable objectives for delivery of successful outcomes on all Chamber events, projects, industrial economic projects, tourism and corporate conferences, and related programs; align objectives with annual budget revenue and expense projections.

Board Relations

  • The President/CEO is responsible to maintain strong relationships, communicate in a professional manner, and provide leadership necessary to garner the full engagement of the board members.
  • Share in the joint responsibility with the Board of Directors for developing and maintaining full transparency, a strong working relationship, and a system for sharing information that enables the Board to effectively carry out its governance role.
  • Assist the Board in developing a long-range plan to build the appropriate Board to best represent the interests of the membership (including board succession planning, position development, and long-range candidate identification).

Other board relations duties include preparing an agenda, maintaining Board minutes and records, implementing Board plans and programs in accordance with Board direction and established policies, serving as the primary contact with Chamber staff, initiating ideas for consideration by the Board and collaborating with the Board on all matters regarding current vision, mission, and initiatives

About the Chamber: The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce is over 100 years old, having been the voice of business in the Concho Valley since 1916. It currently has over 1,100 active members and has been awarded a 5-Star Accreditation by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Of the almost 7,000 chambers in the U.S., only 199 are accredited. This Chamber is dedicated to creating a vibrant business community in the San Angelo area. The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce includes an Economic Development Department, a Destination Marketing Department, (that manages the award-winning Visitor Center) and a Young Professionals Department in addition to the Business Services Department. The total budget for the Chamber and each of its departments is in excess of $2 million annually.

  • Minimum of five years of executive-level management and leadership experience for a business or nonprofit organization.
  • A businessperson with a record of involvement at the leadership level in community organizations, trade associations and public-sector organizations.
  • An excellent internal leader recognized for the ability to develop, motivate, and build functional teams that regularly achieve and maintain superior levels of performance.
  • Experience in personnel management, including recruitment, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Have demonstrated leadership skills for setting goals, objectives, plan and track multiple projects, and to hold people accountable. Show leadership for embracing diversity and success in working with the community.
  • A proven successful executive with a demonstrated record of delivering results in line with the objectives of the strategic plan and to provide dynamic internal and external leadership to the Chamber to achieve revenue objectives, budgeted annual gross and net revenue, and other program and financial goals.
  • Strong financial acumen, including experience with budgeting, accounting, financial analysis, and fiscal management.
  • Demonstrate an executive mind, capable of looking at the big picture, absorbing information quickly, thinking broadly, analyzing thoroughly, and acting decisively. Show willingness to pursue new ideas and challenge traditional thinking.
  • Demonstrate willingness to personally engage in hands-on project support for Chamber departments as requested or determined by President/CEO.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the business community, economic development, and political dynamics within the region and established relationships with the region’s influential leaders in business, non-profits, and politics.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain a credible reputation and high-profile presence in the community on behalf of an organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan work activities and handle multiple project priorities and work with time pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic business or political strategies and manage the tactical execution to achieve results.
  • Strong strategic thinking capabilities, with the ability to develop and implement long-term plans that align with the Chamber’s mission and goals.

  • Possess superior communication and presentation skills along with strong listening, written, and verbal skills. Experience establishing positive and proactive communication with Board, staff, membership, public sector, civic groups, and general members of the community. Proven experience with traditional and online media.
  • Demonstrated non-partisan and strategic public policy skills, and experience working with elected officials. Extensive knowledge of state and local government operations and legislative processes.
  • Proven record for engaging, partnering, and building alliances with a wide range of constituencies that includes business leaders, elected officials, and leaders from other organizations.
